MITHRIDATE – ‘THE MIRROR STAGE’ SPRING SUMMER 2022 – DIGITAL EXPERIENCE
Mithridate’s new SS22 collection immerses the audience in an infinitely mirrored orange orchard catwalk stage in Shanghai.
Founder and Creative Director Demon Zhang approaches the collection through a surrealist lens as seen from the title, The Mirror Stage, Jacques Lacan’s psychoanalytic theory based on the emotional and perceptive development of children.
Zhang was fascinated by a child’s basic emotions: happiness, sadness, hunger & fear and wanted to explore why adults neglect their inner child.
Zhang was also influenced by generational relationship dynamics within modern popular culture references such as Tarsem Singhs’ 2008 surrealist film The Fall which explores the impact a child can have on an adult’s attitude and the lessons to be learnt from a child’s freer emotional scope.
The SS22 inspirations are captured in the designs of flaming oranges, the location and set design of an orange orchard reflected with mirrors, as well as child hand drawn prints mirrored against grey detailed illustrations capturing the contrasts of the adult and inner child.
Zhang has produced a vast collection of 60 gender neutral, vegan looks.
Motifs from earlier collections can be recognised like sharp tailoring, oversized masculine trousers, fitted skirts, billowing layered dresses in silk tulles, voluminous shapes, oversized basics and distressed denim.
New this season are striking prints of child drawn pictures, detailed illustrations and graphic designs of flaming oranges and swords, in a contrasting colour palette of dull greys, bright whites and clashing primary tones.
Accessories range from printed silk scarves, embroidered baseball caps, silk face masks shaped as the signature moth, together with pearl and Swarovski crystal encrusted fruit shaped jewellery.
