DiscoveryLAB presents: British Mustard in collaboration with TONI&GUY
British mustard is a creative duo featuring Kai Cornwall & Ellen critchley.
british mustard first collection is called “incipience” which means gradually moving forward, we choose this word due to the fact that it links with our designs as in the mechanism behind life you always move forward you can never go back and that’s just like our designs and what our brand represents slowly gaining empowerment and equality throughout the world and the fashion industry including for coloured individuals.
we got our inspirations from hidden icons throughout black history, each garment is like an archival piece of armour that museums forgot to show to the world, the collection takes us through a journey of print based and textural sleek and playful clothing, each piece is a dedication to a significant event, time or a person that helped fight for change and racial equality.
British mustard gender neutral clothing in any form caresses the body and the deep rich colours are hard for the eye not to devour, making a new meaning for the phrase ‘a fashion education.’ this collection features mainly unisex clothing with some more gendered garments, several more wearable pieces and other more avant-garde garments.
new techniques we learnt was too at an object of inspiration and overthink it like whats inside it, how did it get made, what was the overall process when was that first inspirational object created and how did it develop to get to the most recent form, and then we did research into natural patterns such as plant cells and blood vessels and took inspiration from black historic icons and through this we have created strong textural patterns.
As a partnership we enjoy making art which is both provocative and political as well as informative and this is the aim of our collection “incipience”.
