Discovery Lab Presents: DREAMING ELI by Elisa Fall/Winter 2022

If Degas was the painter of dancing girls, Elisa Trombatore is the designer who clothes them: the ballerina who pirouettes on bloody and broken feet, the pole-dancer who wills her body to straddle the pole, limbs long and lithe and aching.
For Autumn/Winter 22, DREAMING ELI presents eleven looks that build upon her elemental first collection of corsetry, lingerie and sportswear. “This collection is my experience of what it means to be female” she says, referring to the two- toned beauty that is suffering and experience. “I was very inspired by Degas’ ballerinas. The dreaminess and texture in his brushstrokes masks the way that he would look upon them and their pain. To him, they were like animals.”
DREAMING ELI’s silhouettes are crafted from a technique called devoré, which translated from the French, means to devour.
Keyholes of flesh and veins of pink give rugged texture to lines that are otherwise long and languid. Tulles, satins and silks are layered in various shades of blush, folding onto the body like masses of blossoms, heady and blooming and full. Clothing vines along the contours of the body like a second skin.
Presented on film, DREAMING ELI’s line-up of women inhibit worlds re-imagined from Elisa’s conservative Sicilian heritage. In an overgrown garden of wildflowers, and among archaic walls that in a few years from now, may not even still be standing, DREAMING ELI seeks a femininity that is strong, sensual and demanding.
